Rajasthan Trains Local Guides for Thar Desert Astrotourism

To attract astro-tourists to the clear night skies of the Thar Desert, Rajasthan’s Tourism Department has begun training local youth in astronomy and night-sky navigation. In places like Jaisalmer and Bikaner, participants learn to use telescopes, stargazing apps, and traditional desert navigation methods. Certified guides now offer night desert walks explaining constellations, myths, and celestial science. Tourism footfall during new moon nights has increased, and camel operators report improved earnings. The initiative blends scientific outreach with cultural storytelling and sustainable night tourism. Rajasthan plans to host India’s first desert astro-festival later this year.
