Gujarat’s coastal districts—particularly in coastal Kutch and Dwarka—now host community-driven plastic recycling hubs. These centres, managed by local fishers and coastal volunteers, collect plastic waste washed ashore, segregate it, and convert it into low-grade plastic bricks alongside selling recyclables to formal recycling units. Education campaigns at schools and docking stations reinforce zero-waste behavior among tourists and fishermen. In six months, over 20 tons of coastal plastic have been processed, reducing marine pollution significantly. The hubs also produce plastic bricks for local pathway construction. Gujarat’s coastal communities are involved in both clean-up and enterprise, aligning livelihoods with environmental stewardship. The project aims to replicate the model across eight coastal talukas with support from NGOs and industry.
